Construction and development works today needs to be sustainable as well environment friendly and human friendly. The field of construction determines to what extent is construction human friendly as well as environment friendly. Taking this thing mainly into consideration, steel business federation had once organized a workshop seminar.

Lead causes negative impacts in intellectual development of children and also impacts their respiration process. Lead exposure is responsible for death of 143000 children and intellectual disability of 6 million children per year. It causes severe health problems and especially impacts bones. Furthermore, excessive lead exposure causes menstrual problems and miscarriage in women and brings high blood pressure, impotency and kidney problems in men as per the joint program of Public Health and Environmental Promotion Centers and Kyurpak. In the program, issues regarding the harmful effects of paints containing leads beyond the acceptable limit were discussed.

62 countries in world has been successful to set and follow the parameter for paint, but Nepal still lags behind in seeking information regarding the matter. On Poush 7, 2071, Government had set the parameter for paint by publishing information in gazette. Despite Nepal Government has set the parameter for paint, the parameter is not successfully implemented yet. If the parameters are not effectively implemented soon, then Nepal has to face severe damage to workers, consumers and environment.

There is no negative impact of using lead free paint on investment and profit in paint business. People involved in paint business should know that the cost of using lead free paint is lower than the cost of environmental damage. So, it’s important that all stakeholders get committed to an objective of using lead-free paints.

Lead-free paints difficult proposition

Do you admit that paints available in Nepali market contain lead?

Yes, and I think many people are aware of it. And many studies were also conducted that showed there is lead contamination in paints. But, I don´t think this issue is very pressing. Lead is also found even in vermilion powder. Do people stop using vermillion powder even after knowing that it contains lead? No, and the same goes for our paints, too.

Do you mean lead contaminated paints are usable? Aren´t they harmful?
No, I don´t mean to say that. Lead contaminated paints are certainly harmful for humans. But we don´t have other options right now and our unstable government cannot afford to go for other alternatives. And another major problem is that the market is flooded with imported paints and lead content is high in most of these paints compared to Nepalese-manufactured paints. Our country is like dumping site for other countries as they dump all the lead contaminated paints in Nepal.

So, what could be its proper solution?
First, the government should inquire about all the imported paints and formulate policy accordingly. Only then can we think about lead-free paint in Nepal. But I don´t think the government is currently in position to resolve the problem.

Is there any plan of our association to solve lead poisoning in paints?
The problem cannot be resolved until and unless the people themselves become aware about the health hazards associated with lead and are ready to pay for lead-free technology, which is relatively costlier.

Also the factories that manufacture paints do not have technology and funds for manufacturing lead-free paints. Merely putting pressure on the paints manufacturers to go for lead-free technology does not work because both the manufacturers and the customers in Nepal should first be able to afford such technology.

Surface Preparation

Ensure that the new or previously painted surface is clean and free from grease, dust or any loose paints. Make sure that surface is just wet but not over-wet. If there is problem on the plastered surface due to salty water or salt in sand, it should be treated with mild acid before the application of ACC wall putty else wall putty will not stick to the wall and problem of flake may arise. After 30 minutes of treating the surface with mild acid, wash the surface thoroughly so that no acid remain on the walls.

Application Instructions

-Stir the container well before use. -Allow the surface to dry completely after washing it thoroughly. Now the surface will be ready for ACC wall putty to be applied. -Apply ACC wall putty on large holes and cracks to cover it in the ration of 2:1 and allow it to dry. - Sprinkle water over the ACC wall putty applied surfaces for few days to get the better result.
